To those who love Louisiana:

I am relocating to La within the next six months. I will be covering the state from Lake Charles to New Orleans, by car. Out of all those locations, where to live? Looking for safe, reasonable cost, not in flood plain, access to I-10 and I-12.

That whole area is subject to flooding. I like Prairieville outside of Baton Rouge. Lafayette has some nice areas as does Covington/Mandeville area of St. Tammany Parish.

Lafayette is on the highest ground, followed by the older parts of Lake Charles. Ironically, the south part of town, the most popular part, is the lowest elevation. If you live in the New Orleans area, stay within the levees and you'll be dry. They just spent billions overhauling them.

As far as safest that is definitely Lafayette. The most reasonable costs will be in Lafayette as they are in a downturn right now but Lake Charles is in an upturn so prices are higher there. However, should the price of oil rebound, prices in Lafayette will rebound.

Also, if you are having to travel across the state a lot, Lafayette would be more centered so your average distance to travel would be less.

I wouldn't recommend Alexandria. It is called the "arm pit" of Louisiana.

Carencro is a small Cajun town.

If the selection were narrowed to Alexandria or Carencro only, I personally would select Carencro.
Though it is a smaller town, it is friendly, and accessible to I-10.

Carencro is really close to Lafayette. Its a small town but not a far drive from amenities. Its a nice little place.
