That whole area is subject to flooding. I like Prairieville outside of Baton Rouge. Lafayette has some nice areas as does Covington/Mandeville area of St. Tammany Parish.

Lafayette is on the highest ground, followed by the older parts of Lake Charles. Ironically, the south part of town, the most popular part, is the lowest elevation. If you live in the New Orleans area, stay within the levees and you'll be dry. They just spent billions overhauling them.

Carencro is really close to Lafayette. Its a small town but not a far drive from amenities. Its a nice little place.
