How is the Gonzales area? A friend is considering moving to that area. Can he find an affordable apartment in a safe area there?

Gonzales is mostly safe and is growing rapidly. I'm starting to see apartments popping up along the interstate exits there, particularly the Hwy 30 exit.

The thing to remember about Ascension Parish was that it was a poor river parish before the petrochemical industry moved in. So the areas NOT to live in are on the west bank (Donaldsonville) or near the river. Between I-10 and Airline all the wya down to LA 30 are where a lot of the affluent new subdividions are, although between Airline and the Amite River, you have a mixture of good ole Cajuns and more modestly priced new subdivisions.

Default Gonzales, Prairieville

I lived between Prairieville and Gonzales in a little area called Galvez about 15 years ago and always felt safe. Apartments (the two they did have back then) were very reasonable and the people were great. I still have friends in the area and they say it is booming there but still they wouldn't live anywhere else.

My friend won't be needing info on the Gonzales area. He won't be making it back to Louisiana after all because he took his life May 11, another Katrina casualty.
Rest In Peace my brother.

I wonder why you would tell folks not to live in Donaldsonville? It has extremely low crime and low cost of living. I have lived there for over 10 years and I love it. I grew up in New Orleans and I lived in Baton Rouge for 8 years. Donaldsonville seems to be one of Louisiana's best places to live. It is convenient to both Baton Rouge and New Orleans but is not subject to the crime, taxes, or traffic hassles.
As of 2010, Donaldsonville (zip 70346)'s population is 11,430 people. Since 2000, it has had a population growth of 0.33 percent. Donaldsonville's historic district is the second largest in the state. People are friendly and the kids still play outside in the yards and neighborhoods.

The median home cost in Donaldsonville (zip 70346) is $88,110. Home appreciation the last year has been 0.60 percent.

Compared to the rest of the country, Donaldsonville (zip 70346)'s cost of living is 18.20% Lower than the U.S. average.

Donaldsonville (zip 70346) public schools spend $4,779 per student, which is the same as in Baton Rouge. The average school expenditure in the U.S. is $5,678. There are about 9.8 students per teacher in Donaldsonville (zip 70346).

The unemployment rate in Donaldsonville (zip 70346) is 6.30 percent(U.S. avg. is 10.20%).
