I'm late to this discussion but I'm with STX--Louisville is a perfectly safe town for gay/lesbian/bi-sexual persons. I have quite a few gay and lesbian friends, and they experience little to no dramas over their sexual orientation. I think Louisville is quite a relaxed and accepting place to live. Of course, the majority of them live in the areas that STX lists although I do know quite a few couples that live in the southend and have zero problems.
Although I myself am heterosexual, I used to frequent The Connection with a group of friends (gay/lesbian, bi, straight--we were a bit of a mix!) and we always had a fantastic time. It was my preferred night spot in my mid-late 20's. Now I prefer to stay in for quiet nights!
Like STX says, it's no SoCal, but it's a great place to live and socialise. I think you will find it a pleasant place to relocate to.

Living in Oz I could easily replace "banjo" with any number of sterotypical items (I imagine you could do the same!): rocking chairs, overalls, spittoons, jugs of moonshine/whiskey, 1000 smelly hound dogs under the front porch, guns racks in the back window of a pickup truck..........the list is endless!

I have to disagree with the southern part of town comment. My partner and I live in Valley station (with many other gay couples in the area) and we absolutely love it. We don't advertise our business, but we don't hide it either. The east end is becoming more snotty with pockets of urbanism all the time. At least the "red necks" over here don't pretend to be something they are not and are pretty accepting of everyone.

Valley Station is fairly unpretentious and really not for folks into hipster/yuppie "lifestyle consumption". Which, paradoxically, makes it perhaps a good place for nonconformists of various types. People do do their own thing out there, yet are still connected to whats going on in the larger Greater Louisville area.

An artsy area in need of revitalization is old louisville, or perhaps, buthcertwon. They are already mostly revitalized, but there are some areas around each hood which could use some work, and there are lots of gays and artists in these areas. Good luck!
