So my girlfriend and I moved to Louisville a little over a year ago. We both grew up in the south (Alabama) in a fairly civilized but rural area. Normal life for us was being surrounded by state parks and being able to say "Hey, let's grill out" and going to the grocery store and buying some meat and having burgers and beer by the lake an hour later. We could go out in the yard and just hang out, jog in the city park, swim at the lakes and rivers, you name it.

Now that we love here, we're going stir crazy. Our apartment has no yard, and we never really see the outdoors. We don't know where to find it! We don't know where to go to swim, cycle, walk, jog, hike, grill, etc. We tried hiking in an area near Fort Knox that was (according to the signs) a public hiking trail. Halfway down the trail, a man started shouting at us to "go back" and then fired a gun into the woods. He shouted "Turn your a__ around and don't come back!" and we left. We never even saw him, and we've been afraid to try going out anywhere around here ever since.

Please help! Where can we go to just relax and enjoy a little fresh air and green (or blue) grass? A dip in the lake and some hot dogs on a grill? The great outdoors?

Thanks!

Jefferson Memorial Forest, I prefer the part off Holsclaw Hill Road because its trails offer good views of the skyline

Waterfront Park is also really nice, there is free parking along River Road near I-65

Where was that trail? If it was bridges to the past there are times when Fort Knox uses it to train soldiers. What part of town are you in?

Otter Creek is fun to go to and you can swim in the creek. How far are you willing to drive?

Two great places in nearby Southern Indiana are Charlestown State Park and the Falls of the Ohio. Bernheim Forest near Bardstown is also very nice. Don't forget local city parks like Long Run Park, Tom Sawyer, and McNeely Lake.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll drive for hours if it's worth the trip...

And in answer to the question, I'm pretty sure it was the bridges to the past area. I can assure you that it wasn't a soldier considering the fact that there were other people out there hiking in the area, there were no signs of the military currently in the area, we were on a public hiking trail, and a US soldier would not shout profanity at us, speak to us in a derogatory manner, or fire a gun to frighten civilians while hiding in the woods.

I have walked the main path before and there is a sign that says that during certain times there may be military training in the area. There is a paved path and then a dirt path that goes uphill. The up hill part is where the military goes to train. I am not sure if this was the case you are talking about but I can definately can understand why you would be frightened!

I love hiking around the mammoth cave area and it is about an hour and a half from me. You can get in the green river there and you can also fish without a license!
