Hello all:

I will be relocating from Atlanta to Louisville probably by July 1st and was wondering if anyone here have an idea were can I rent an apartment in a "quite", nice and low crime rate area. I have read numerous posts and done some research, in fact some of them suggest living within certain zip codes and avoid certain areas like "West side of Louisville", "West of 9th ST and North of Alg.. Pkwy". Truly I am completely lost because I do not know the area. The problem for me is that I will be working at Stanley Gult Pkwy, 40223 (wherever this is) and have NO idea whether I should try to find an apartment within or close to this zip code, for example 40241 or I would just have to travel from the St Matthews/Downtown areas even though it will be a good 15-18 miles stretch. What do you recommend? Don't get me wrong when I say "quite", I love downtown living and partying. We do not have kids which means that I don't have to worry about schools systems and what not; (wife is late 20's and I am 31), so, we are young, however I hate traveling distances, I guess because I am fed up with ATL traffic!!!

Any idea if the area were I will be working is a good place to rent or not?

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

St Matthews is not downtown at all, but rather about 10-15 minutes east of the CBD depending on what part of St Matthews. Based on what you are looking for, I think the area known as Crescent Hill/Heart of St Matthews would best fit what you want. Its got a bit of a hip factor--cool ethnic restuarants close by and a nice local gym etc, but it is very quiet and safe. There are also many old condo rehabs, apartments, as well as homes. Many couples your age live there and I always see them walking dogs and what not down Frankfort Ave. Don't worry, Louisville traffic is nothing like Atlanta. Also, because downtown is so well served by freeways, even if you chose to live in the heart of downtown you could make it to your suburban workplace (Stanley Gault Parkway) in 20 minutes.

The Highlands are also cool, and if you stay close to the 64/Grinstead interchange, you won't be far from work at all, yet in the heart of what Louisville has to offer. For reference, the Highlands in Louisville is similar to the neighborhood with the same name in ATL.

After learning the names of these neighborhoods and suburbs, you can search for many of them on wikipedia where they generally have fair and accurate assessments of many urban areas in Louisville.

The ones that I would recommend based on your age and proposed interests would be downtown/Butchertown, Crescent Hill, Clifton, St Matthews, and the Highlands/Cherokee Triangle.

If you want newer apartments that have more a suburbanish setting but still located halfway between work and downtown, you may want to try the area around Mallard Crossing apartments in St. Matthews. PM me with any questions.
