My husband will be transferring to Texas in the next 6 months, (either Lubbock or Dallas) so I am curious to find out what are areas to avoid, safest areas to live, convenient to downtown. We will probably rent for the first year until he is stable in his new position before buying a home, so names of apartments, homes for rent, etc. would be appreciated. We have a 3 year old son that will be in school soon so, obviously, good schools are important too.

For Lubbock, the newest areas are in the southwest, outside the Loop. However, it's been too many years since we owned a home in SW Lubbock near the area of 98th and Slide so I will let someone here who is more in touch with current Lubbock to assist you further about rentals.

If you do decide to come to the Lubbock area, from my family to yours, welcome.

Hi - If you are moving to Lubbock, I would ask your realtor to be near Oakridge, Crestview, or Bennett elementary. Or for LISD, ask to be around Honey or Whiteside Elementary. Or request Cooper Schools. If you want a small-town atmosphere, I recommend Shallowater or Idalou.

Lubbock is pretty safe all around.
Just avoid the east side of town.

There's a lot of development north and southwest. I grew up in the northwest part and it's a pretty cool place. Safe and near several amenities.
