Good for you, so you only shop at walmart, target, kroger, because thats all in Houston. Tanger has everything on its property which is about the size of a walmart, that Warner Robins has, mayb more.

I know this posting is late for the man planning to move to Macon, but this may help someone else. If you will be employed downtown at the medical center, this should be one of the best places for employment and to meet new friends/colleagues. "North Macon" will give you advantages because it is a nice place to live (Bass / Zebulon / Rivoli Areas are favorable). The small city has much potential and there are concerned citizens that really do care.
Now here's another side to it...
This small city is a big small town. This sounds good in many ways, but it will be a difficult transition for the outsider. This is not Atlanta. This is not Charlotte. This is Macon. This is Deep South with deep roots. Southern hospitality... friendly people. If you're from a larger city, or from up north, be prepared for a slower pace, generally customer no-service, poor and poorly educated, country club blue-bloods, racism both black and white seething just below the surface, doctors and land owners as kings in this town, costly private schools, some great old history, good churches, few recreation facilities except for the country club, maybe three good restaurants, extreme provincialism, and everyone knows everything about everyone.

Me and my family moved here from the Midwest and lived in Macon for many years. Eventually we realized there were better opportunities for us elsewhere in this good state of Georgia, and we made the move. We made the right decision. I still wish Macon well, and hope for progress.

Default If you choose Macon.....

If you choose Macon, Choose N. Macon, and Choose Private! I recently moved here (all of 2 months ago) and we chose Macon for it's character and proximity to Atlanta. My husband commutes to Warner Robins, and it takes him about 35 minutes. We got a GREAT deal on a house just off Zebulon Road, and have been very happy with our decision so far. If you choose Public for your children, I would look at the Springdale and/or Sonny Carter school zones...I have met several professionals who have expressed happiness with both of these schools. I have also heard very good things about Byron elementary schools, but I am not sure if that will meet your 20 minute litmus test. I think Macon has a bad Rep, but so far I have loved it here. I got a great job (I am a college professor) and my kids go to a great private school (You will have several to choose from if that is the route you choose) I have attended a few functions in the down town area and have not personally felt unsafe, but my guard is always up because of what I have heard on here and on the news =( Good luck with your move, I hope you find success where ever you settle....

My family is considering moving to Macon,Ga to get away from gang violence and negative enviroments here in Boston, Massachusetts. But lately I have been reading about a lot of the nice places to move to, but for those of us who don't know how to work the maps online that well I was wondering about this North, South, East and West of Macon. How do you know you are looking in the North, South, East or West of Macon? We've read a lot of articles from the channel 13 news in Macon and some other sites about the Gang violence, and it seems to be out of control. With their initiations being to target (shoot) random people to join, it's a little scary, we have been thinking of staying here. But right now we have been looking at these places:

First Street Lane (31210)/ Reese Street (31217)/ Shi Place (31206)/ Dove Street (31204)/ Deeb Drive (31206)/ Kings Park Circle (31217)/ Balkcom Avenue (31217)/ Poppy Ave (31204)/ Echols Place (31206)/ Echols Drive (31206)/ Triple hill / Lowe Street (31204)/ Ohara Drive (31206)/ Madison Street (31201).

We really want to move out of boston but if we are going to move towards the same type of enviroment then I really don't know about moving.

Does anyone know the streets we should be looking into or not looking into?

Most of your streets appear to be lower income neighborhoods. These neighborhoods need good people willing to improve the areas but most folks aren't so inclined. The "gang" problem in Macon is pretty cheesy compared to bigger cities. Our gangs are juvenile wanna-bes who victimize each other and generally leave the masses alone. There are isolated events (i.e. pursesnatching) but this place isn't so dangerous. IMO. Are you looking for a particular price range in your selection of sites? There are a lot of decent houses for reasonable ranges and neighborhoods due to the current real estate situation. I would contact a local real estate agent to get more info on specific areas.

What price range? We lived in Macon for 10 years (from Atlanta) and recently moved to Columbus due to job location. We really liked Macon. I agree with Stickman64, the gang violence usually is toward other gangs. We lived just over the Ocmulgee from downtown and never had any crime problems. I did not recognize any streets you posted but can say.... stay North of downtown. Neighborhoods off of Pierce Rd, Northern Vineville Ave, Ingleside Rd, Forsyth Ave, Bass Road (kind of pricey) are ok. If you are looking at a map of Macon, Pierce Rd is just north of downtown off of I-75. If you go west on Pierce, you will cross over Ingleside Rd.....continue west and Vineville Ave is the first major intersection. Find a realtor for specifics. Macon is ok. In a nutshell, listen to Stickman64 because he's right on the money.

I know you said WR was out, but it might be worth it to look at their schools (AWESOME!!). Plus, if you live on the east side of town, you can zip right up 247 and get to Macon fairly quickly. My husband was telling me that WR keeps getting voted "Best Place to Raise a Family" or something like that.

North Macon has some Beautiful areas. Personally I would live in Houston county and make the commute. Macon has a lot to offer in shopping and restaurants, Monroe county is growing also and has a small town feel in Forsyth area.
