I remember it snowed 3 inches on Oct 10, 1990. It snowed about 4 inches on Oct Oct 26, 1997. There have been plenty of lesser snows on other days in Oct as well over the last 40 years that I spent Oct in Madison. However, it does melt fairly quickly, and can't be considered major storms. It can be chilly a lot more often. Night temps in the teens after mid-Oct are not uncommon.

To answer your specific question, the last time there was significant snow in Oct in Madison was Oct 21, 2006 (2.3 inches).

Here's a link to a calendar of events, starting in September. Not all will be of interest for your family, but there's a lot of neat stuff in here:

Last year, we took the kids and met some other family members at Waldvogel's Farm , which is in-between Beaver Dam and Horicon. Seemed to have all the things you were looking for, except for allowing dogs (I would think that would be a rare find, given all the kids and farm animals). Before / after, you can check out the migrating geese and fall color in the Horicon Marsh / Wildlife Refuge.

Treinen annually switches up their corn maze. It is different every year and very fun! It's a big maze however, so it's good to keep very little kids close to you so they don't get lost.

Last year around October 9th the weather was very warm and somewhat humid. I remember being in Darlington that day and it must've been about 83-85.
