New Englander here.

Burlington is very comparable to Madison.

Boston is a fabulous city, but larger.

Portland is very comparable size-wise to Appleton (72K - 73K) but Portland is, IMO, friendlier and the Old Port is wonderful.

I've lived in and or spent time in every placed mentioned.BEYOND DOUBT Burlington
and Madison. Both are Bolder only colder.Only real diff is size and restrictive gun laws in WI. BUT parts of Madison are becoming ghettoized and crime is definitely on the rise.
If you dont need an ultra-liberal atmosphere Appleton,WI is the nicest city in the USA.

..hands down, Burlington, VT is quite similar to Madison, just on a smaller scale, especially when comparing the size of the two state universities.

Basically, if you like one of them, you'll like the other.

Liver in Burlington for 25+ years, lived in Madison for one, and visit once/year..

.. to continue the same thought, I saw where Drover mentioned Manchester, NH. Manchester is not bad, but a bit grimy in parts, and has more of an industrial heritage from the 19th century (old woolen mills by the riverfront), and , outside of St. Anselm's College, MUCH less of a collegiate atmosphere than either Burlington or Madison. I honestly don't think you'd enjoy Manchester as much, unless you want greater proximity to Boston. Don't forget that Burlington is only 1 1/2 hrs from Montreal, if you want that big-city environment...
