my husband, 8 year old son and I are looking to move to the Madison area. I'm a white wisconsinite and my husband is latino. we're currently living in Green Bay and can't wait to get out. the GB area is so insular and the only way to get anywhere with a job here is to be part of the "locals only in group"; which is impossible as they are not taking any new members (lol)! my husband applied to jobs only to find out through acquaintances that the only way he could get an interview is if a current employee attaches a recommendation for him. we encountered this situation at numerous companies. he currently has a job here but he's in the process of looking for one in the Madison area.

My question is, what is the atmosphere in Madison in regards to latinos? I know no place is perfect, but the many times we've spent there, we felt very comfortable and felt the people were very friendly and open (especially in comparison to GB).

Also, we are looking for a long-term rental (5-10 years) preferably not in a rental community, but a house, condo or townhome for rent in the $1000 to $1500 range. my son is currently in a gifted program, so we need a school district that will address these needs. I've heard good things about Middleton, Verona, Waunakee, and Oregon. Where would you locals recommend we look given these needs? Thanks so much everyone.

May I suggest you search this forum for the word "diversity?" There are many very good discussions here of how Madison has fairly small minority populations, but Madisonians embrace diverse people with great enthusiasm.

I lived there for 10 years, but I didn't truly grasp how that was the case until I read it here.

I lived in the northern part of Fitchburg back in 2006 and it seemed to have a decent concentration of Latino families there. Everybody was pretty cool with it as far as I could tell.

If you've got kids you might want to steer clear of Coho Street. Although I moved, every once in a while I'd check Madison's online police incident reports and noticed Coho came up every now and then.
