Hi! Does anyone here have any experience living in Hatchery Hill? What are your thoughts? We've been looking at the townhomes there and were curious about the area.

It's a nice area. Are you planning to buy or rent? Some of the apartments weren't built with the best quality, but are okay for a temporary place to live.

The location is close to a medical facility, The Great Dane Brew Pub (a local fav) and lots of small businesses.

Within 5 minutes of that location there is:
  • a postal sub station which is convenient since Fitchburg doesn't have an actual postal branch
  • a brand new state of the art library going in just down the road, which will be completed next summer.
  • a farmer's market close by in the summer.
  • a series of jazz concerts in the park
  • There is a killer art fair with actual art, not just the crafty junk you see at many art fairs these days.
  • a good sized grocery store (Copps)
I always had the misconception that Fitchburg didn't really have its own identity separate from Madison, but having worked/volunteered on the library project for over a year now, I can tell you I was wrong. It is a nice community and you can choose how involved you want to be with local happenings. They are always looking for volunteers and it is a great way to meet a lot of nice people.

What exactly are you looking for in a community?

We rented a 2 bedroom apt. in Hatchery Hill about a year and a half ago. I remember there were a ton of townhomes on the market back then and could only guess there are still many on the market today. I have to imagine that a few have sold due to the 1st time home buyer credit.

That said I loved the convenience of the area. Walk to the grocery store, the Great Dane, Qdoba, etc..

However with so many on the market, I would be afraid that if I bought and tried to resell in a few years, that it could take awhile to sell or get your asking price with so much available.

IMO it is more for singles/DINKS. It would seem you would have a "big" parking lot view. Be careful buying (especially condo types) unless you plan to stay awhile. It's questionable whether we have reached bottom yet.

Thanks, all! This is very helpful! There is a townhome for rent that we're very interested in - just looking to rent at first - no big commitments yet. We'll be "commuting" to the University. And we are DINKs! I love that it sounds like this is a walkable area and has a community feel as well. I was concerned we wouldn't get a sense of community out side the beltline, but from what I'm hearing, that's just not true.
