Propane in my region (W. Maine/White Mts) is now $3.55 - 3.60 per gal. as of today, 2/28/11.

The question is should I fill up my 1000 gal. underground tank now, or fill it only 1/2 full and hope that prices will come down this summer? I realize it's a crap shoot, and with the world in turmoil, it may be likely that prices will continue to be even higher this summer. I'd like to know your opinion...

Leverage yourself.. fill up half now and then wait if you want.

I always thought propane was one of those things that the more you bought the cheaper it is.. I would call around.. for a 1000 gallons you would think you could get a good buy even if the guy had to drive a bit to get there.. maybe even one of the bigger tankers could get there and fill it up?? IDK

either way your right.. its expensive

I'd fill it if it were me. Prices won't be dropping significantly for the summer.

With the propane companies, it does help if you complain. the squeaky wheel will get some grease.

They filled our 60 gallon propane tank today. I told the driver not to bother as we only use about 10 gallons a month cooking and running a gas clothes dryer and I had not dug out the path because it had just been filled two weeks ago. The old company only filled us up every two months and we consistantly took 20 gallons on a fill. We changed companies and tanks from our previous supplier as they had gone out of business. He was insistant and said that since we were new customers they wanted to be sure we didn't run out. I said "suit yourself". He slogged through two and a half feet of wet, slushy snow, dragging the 100 feet of hose behind him out to the tank and filled it anyway....it took 5 gallons. I said "I told you so!" His remark was "I'll see you in April!!" I replied "make that late April"

Wow! That's expensive, especially compared to heating oil. By that I mean that propane has around 90 to 93K BTU per gallon, while heating oil has around 140K BTU, and yet propane is priced around the same per gallon to use your figure, so on a per-BTU basis, propane is way out of whack.

Ouch.

We're going to see more manufacturers jump in to the wood burning cook stove space I think and I'll probably be one of their customers.

That works great this time of year. August... not so much so...
(from one who's been there)

I love it when they try to convince you it's in your best interest - disregarding the fact that you are well aware of your own needs.

I have a friend in NH who tried to order 100 gallons of oil (the minimum for delivery the previous year at the same dealer). Understandably, it doesn't behoove them business-wise to spend a lot of money to deliver 50 gallons if there are only a few customers ordering that day. I can certainly understand that. The problem was that they went from 100 gallon minimum to a 150 gallon minimum, and she didn't have the money for the extra 50 gallons - period. She had planned for the 100 and no more as her mortgage was due. She debated about ordering more wood, but decided that it wasn't worth it at this stage of winter.

She called back and told them to cancel it and that she'd just lug kerosene until she could afford to order the minimum.

Interestingly, they were there delivering her 100 gallons within the hour.

She had the same thing happen for her propane as well.
