Look, I have heard about a whole police force responding to a call in Beverly Hills, to save a cat up on a tree at some starlet house...
Count your blessings Maine I say!

In the last town we lived in before moving to Maine, I got to reading the local paper every week and I was shocked at how many murders, rapes, and child abductions they had weekly.

One little girl was snagged from the sidewalk on our block, and I learned that within four blocks was a spot where bodies were routinely dumped after being knifed, ...

While I was making trips to Maine shopping for land here, they had a series of scandals in the local PD:

after a PD promotion party drunken LEOs shot out a group of street lights;

a detective had been hiring young girls to pose for nude photos supposedly as a part of a child porn sting [but nobody else in the PD knew anything about it];

and senior LEOs had worked out a way to cook-the-books on their pension and had gotten the city accountant to go along with it.

I am very glad to be away from that nonsense.

Mainers have a lot to be thankful for.

I was wasting time reading the York police log and saw 2 silly reports from this week. They made me giggle so I thought I'd share.

I was told a few weeks ago that a tourist came to the police station complaining her car had been hit by paintballs. When the cop got there he explained it was only the gulls. At least they are staying busy.

You know, you could warn a gal who was drinking water while reading your post that this was going to have a killer punchline.

As for what constitutes news in local papers...not much IMHO.

Weekly newspapers throughout the country are not only thriving, but growing. Our two Maine weeklies are enjoying circulation growth and steady advertising revenue. Folks love to read all of the news you all have posted here while also getting the news that helps them be good citizens in their communities. New Englanders especially love newspapers. More than 50% of New England's community newspapers are purchased on the newsstand as opposed to mailed or delivered. They just can't wait that long to get their paper!
