When can you generally count on the snow being gone and most of the roads free and clear?

We're planning a trip next spring, roughly late March to early April. Is there still a chance of snow and bad roads? Would it be wiser to wait till May?

Where are you planning to go in the state?

Usually there can be nasty short little snowstorms in late March and Early April. Maineis very good about clearing raods, but these storms can be with heavy wet snow whichis very beautiful on the tree branches, but makes for slick driving evein with snow tires, if the plow and sanding trucks have not donetheire thing.

April is known as the mud month

Mid- Late May would be a better time to visit the state. Lilacs usually are out by Memorial Day

Primarily Bangor, but also a few towns up in Aroostock. And we're probably going to hit a few places in NH and VT as well. Maybe even upstate NY. Should we count on bringing tire chains?

Unless you plan on getting "off the beaten path", you won't need chains. Maine does a great job keeping the roads cleared. (NH and VT do too.)

To be sure you don't run into snow you would be better off waiting until May. Like another poster said, we can get nasty little snow storms at the end of March and the beginning of April. They really can be nasty to drive in.
