Well...Let's see....

If it's a non profit, they could adopt the road, get the deposits...and it would work as a double duty; community service and a fund raise all rolled up in one....

just a thought...

And what about all the rest of the trash with no value? McDonalds bags, dipers, etc. With the price of aluminum so high, there is no need for the law.

Maybe place a $0.10 cent rebate on cigarette butts too. LOL.

The bottle law/deposits is so dumb Missouri and Delaware already repealed theirs and only 10 other states do it.

It has already been shown that even at a 5 cent return, you get more for a return than you would for the scrap price. The argument about high scrap price doesn't hold a shred of truth.

If the bottle deposit stopped tomorrow, people would still collect aluminum for scrap. At $0.83 per lb, yes, that is a high scrap price. Very easy to make money here.

Organized crime is also getting into stealing plastic because of its high scrap price.

Or you could turn them in for a nickle apiece and get $1.55 on average for that same pound. In Michigan it is a 10 cent return so the average would be $3.10 for that same pound. Yeah, scrap is so much better .

The point is, if all can redemption programs were stopped, in all states, going to another state would not exist. People would continue to crush the cans or shred them instead of trucking around full cans filled with air, administrative costs, and all the other waste spent on this program.

If it was stopped today you would see so many bottles and cans littering the highway agin it would be very bad. Since it began in the early 80's I noticed [till I moved away in late 2001] the sides of the road was cleaner and even kids could make money picking up the cans and bottles.

IF you find NH cans you can still bag em up and sell em for scrap metal price. [I do that here in Texas. Aluminum in one bag and Steel cans in others and get anywhere from 12 to 25 dollars ]

But cans/bottles only make up a small portion of all the trash found on the sides of the road. I've volunteered for adopt-a-highway and picked up plenty of trash. This is just one item of many items.

So why would you want to add MORE trash to the side of the road? I fail to see where that would be considered a good thing by anyone.

As a kid I lived out in the country before any bottle bill and in a 1 mile section of road (our house to the corner) I could collect enough cans to stack them 2 wide and 3 tall all the way across our dirt road (don't ask how I know this ) a couple of times a summer, every summer. Now on that same exact section of road I might see 1 can a week while driving down it. When I got a bit older I learned how to drive on that road and used to run over the cans on the edge of the road, I would hit 2 or 3 every day. The difference? Bottle bill was introduced. You can look at cans and bottle laying everywhere like a common garbage dump, I rather like not seeing them everywhere.

...and that was the reason the bottle bill was passed by our lawmakers.
