I saw an article that says Maine is ranked 6th lowest in the nation in automobile insurance affordability.

Supposedly this comes from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

Woo! Hoo!

right?

That makes sense, since it's the 10th smallest state in population. The price of car insurance is based on claim history, and typically the more cars you have on the road the more accidents. In the big cities (of which there are really none in Maine) the cost is a lot more than the suburbs and rural areas because of the traffic, crime, and lack of off-street parking. I have been to Portland (which is probably your biggest city?) and it's just a little larger than our sleepy little town east of Seattle.

One good way to run up your insurance is to blow through a stop sign when you leave the interstate off-ramp. Pull out in front of a logging truck.

Last night they shut down our off-ramp at 5pm and at 9pm it was still shut down.

A STOP sign is not just a suggestion. It is often a really good idea.

When I moved here from Alabama, Mine went down quite a bit. It was a nice surprise.

Cost to register a car is fairly high though.

I think it's $35 dollars, with regular plates. It's the excise tax that's higher.

Another pleasant surprise, after being warned by family. Mine was right about the same amount (its a 2005). Although I agree if its a newer car it would have been more.

I like it when Maine is the lowest in something. It has the lowest in low aged people. It has a low crime rate. It has low taxes for some. It has low rents for new to Mainers while they search for permanency. That's it. I've run out of lows. I'm high on Maine.

That's for the tags not the excise tax. 1998 Jeep Cherokee comes to about $100 per year. Excise is based on the MSRP (not what you paid) on the car. It bottoms out at 6 years. Technically, if you bought a '53 Hudson Hornet you pay on an MSRP of around $2,600; about $11 plus tags. I believe.
