I have about 10+ acres of woods that I would like to have some selective cutting done on. Would I need a permit to be to have selective cutting done on the land? Thanks.

Who's gonna sue you for cutting down their trees?.... it's your land and your trees right?...There's probabley different "ordinances" for different states or areas, so I couldn't say exactly.....where I live I would just do it, with no-one but me the wiser.

Only thing I'm aware of is if you're doing it on waterfront. If it's not waterfront, nothing I know of that keeps you from cutting down your trees.

Or tree growth. Follow the management plan. Other than that, grab the chainsaw.

If you intend to sell the wood you must file a tree harvest notification with the Maine Forest Service. This is not an application or a permit. It is notification. At the end of the year you will then be required to file a landowner harvest report. If you don't do it you will be fined.

If you cut wood for your own use or allow somebody else to thin your woods and don't sell the wood commercially you don't need the notification or the landowner report. It is common practice for owners to allow others to gather firewood on their land. It benefits both parties. You can get rid of poor quality trees and unwanted species. This releases valuable trees to grow faster.

The tree growth plan you have prepared can include many of your own wishes. It is your plan. You just need the assistance of a licensed forester in the preparation to satisfy the state. The more thorough your preliminary instructions to your forester are, the less time the forester will need to take on the property and in drafting your plan. The more organized your pl;an is the lower your cost will be. Most foresters like their work and like working with landowners. Some foresters will give you examples of plans they have prepared. The names of the owners and locations of the properties would be removed.

A tree growth plan is a business plan. You don't share your personal bank business with the public. You don't share the specifics of your tree growth plan either. It is nobody's business but yours and your forester's. Sometimes a neighbor will go into a town office and demand to see a copy of your tree growth plan. The town office doesn't have a copy. The town clerk or tax assessor simply verifies the ownership of the property, the forester's name, the acreage and the expiration date of the plan. You get the original back.
