Disagree, the problem IS that they're here illegally when they should NOT be here. Taking welfare instead of working just adds insult to injury. Illegal is illegal, period. They're stealing from all of us.

"Maine is one of only seven states that still issues licenses to illegals, including those who don't even live in Maine."

This is the most asinine thing I've read in a long time. I thought no state suffered such a severe case of cranio-rectal insertion as California does; but apparently Maine's not far behind (no pun intended).

I don't know this Dean Scontras guy, but he certainly seems to be injecting some much needed common sense into the issue facing Maine. Can we clone him?

Maine is one of only seven states that still issues licenses to illegals, including those who don't even live in Maine... "Massive illegal immigration poses a major national security threat and an economic threat," Scontras said.
Most of the September 11 2001 terrorists used bogus Virginia drivers' licenses that were easy for anyone to get (no more) as their pass to get on those airplanes.

Some of those 911 terrorists entered through Jackman, shopped at the Home Depot in S. Portland for some of their equipment (box cutters?,) and flew into Logan. There is evidence of at least one shopping around Greenville for a day.

Your'e right dmyankee, I do remember that. This past week, 3 Guatamalan nationals were picked up in Houlton using false ID. They were trying to convince motorists to drive them over the border into Canada. I read the story in the Bangor Daily News.

DMYankee
You are wrong about the 9-11 terrorists coming in through Jackman. The Bangor Daily ran a story shortly after 9-11 stating that, but it wasn't factual. The FBI did a thorough investigation of that. Locals reported Mid-Eastern men in the area shortly before 9-11. They also were seen in Bangor. It turned out (from the FBI investigation and lane checks) that they were legitimate travelers from Dubai who entered from Quebec. I seem to remember that they were working for an oil firm. No connection to the 19 terrorists. There where two (Mohammad Atta and his muscle man) that boarded a US Airways flight in Portland that morning. They were then able to board their flight in Boston without passing through security again there. The probable reason for this is they would have drawn less attention by doing so. They had driven up from Boston on Sept 10. It is true that they stayed at the Comfort Inn in South Portland on Sept 10...in room 238 I seem to remember...and the Comfort Inn doesn't have a room by that number any more. It became a tourist attraction if you can believe it! They went to Walmart the night of Sept 10 and did buy a box cutter there.
This thread is about santuary for illegals...the guy who was the pilot-highjacker for Flight 93 that went down in Pennsylvania was stopped by a New Jersey trooper driving over 90 mile an hour the weekend before Sept 11. If he had been required to verify the legal status of this individual he would have found he was an over-stay on a student visa. Had he been detained, the world would have had one less plane crash that day.
All of the highjackers came north from Florida a few days before the highjacking. None entered the US by entering from Canada into Maine.
With all this said, I can't believe Portland (under police chief Chitwood, and Baldacci by an executive order) stated that state employees could not inquire about the legal status of individuals that they encounter.

Illegal immigration is hot button topic that isn't just restricted to Maine. It is a topic of great discussion and concern throughout the US, Canada, and many European nations.

Illegal immigration is also a topic which quickly brings volatile emotions to the surface, so it's especially important in any discussion on the subject to be particularly careful about word choice and the impact statements may have on others who do not necessarily share your views.

City Data has a very strict policy of not allowing racist content on its boards, so, in a thread referring to illegal immigration as a whole, posters need to aware that singling out specific racial/ethnic groups is very likely not going to be acceptable.

For those who wish to express their views on immigration policies in general, City Data does maintain an Immigration forum specificly for that purpose. Threads pushing a distinct agenda also need to made in the relatively less restrictive confines of the Immigration forum.

Let's keep it polite and civil, folks.

Thanks.

I didn't know I couldn't post e-mails I get here that had all the good information in it. But let's just say a veteran went to register to vote in Kennebunkport and had a utility bill with his address on it as well as a valid passport and the clerk wouldn't let him register to vote because he didn't have a drivers license. Yet, an illegal alien in Maine can register to vote because he is able to get a drivers license. That's the problem.
