Same reason they do not lock up drunk drivers. Drugs are evil and you get long mandatory sentences for simply having them but drive drunk or molest a child and no big deal. The worst one is the wife ( girlfriend ) beaters. Before they can do much of anything they subject the female to standing in court and saying what was done to her while the person who assaulted her sits there. Then in Maine if they have kids together even with the most violent offender it is all but impossible to remove parental right so the female who was assaulted must deal with the assaulter for years after the fact.

I once heard a lecture by a "futurist," whatever that is, that made a pretty convincing argument that our country doesn't value its children. Our treatment of pedophiles is just one example I could cite.

I'm a dad, so my reaction to this is completely emotional, not logical or reasonable. If our justice system can't inflict just punishment on pedophiles, then said pedophile gets beaten in prison, the beater shouldn't get time added to his sentence. He should get a parade.
