The Greater Portland Council of Governments has sent a proposal to state lawmakers calling for 600 asylum seekers — most from East Africa and Middle Eastern countries — to be transferred to Unity, Maine.
The intended destination for them is the Unity Environmental University (UEU), a 224-acre campus, largely empty given most of their students are now remote learners. In effect, the entire university would be converted into a transitional – more likely permanent – massive public housing project. If that happened, by definition, Unity would be known as a town where 20 percent of households live in public housing. By comparison, public housing units and Section 8 vouchers combined represent about 4 percent of all households in downtown Detroit.
This plot is all news to Unity. Selectman Tim Parker Jr. said the town has not been approached about the transitional housing. Repeat that: Unity has not been advised about a proposal submitted to state lawmakers that would result in one of the most rapid, non-consensual make-overs of any town in America.

Shouldn't the homeless citizens and poorer families of Maine come first?

The democrats are not happy with only destroying the big cities, they plan to destroy everything.

Yes, you would think Mainers in need would take priority. Not surprised this idea would hatch in Portland. Not the first time local people have learned about a major event after the decisions have been made and without the opportunity to participate in the decision-making process. Keep electing D's and this is what you get. Sorry. Just the truth.

Also, tax payers are on the hook for $8 million to spruce the campus up. I don't get it. Someone explain to me why communities feel the need to welcome hordes of third world asylum seekers. Cheap, exploitable labor backed by tax dollars maybe.

I would be very upset if I worked on a campus, when some city 100 miles away decided to come in and repurpose my campus.

I have attended a few events at the Unity College in Unity Maine, it is not a bad campus.

Just look who's governor and go from there. Maine's lockdowns and obscene over the top reaction was mind boggling. Hurt small business so badly, and Maine IS small business. I hope I can still retire in Maine as well.

What a joke. I'm sure team blue up in Augusta has some grand plan to spend the rest of the states money on this disaster. Hang onto your wallet bub.
