This was posted in the NC forum and reminded me that I've been curious about the topic since we're moving to a semi-rural area in Aroostook County. (Guess that's redundant.) I was under the rose-colored impression that St. Patrick had driven them out of there, too!
I've been told there are snakes, just no poisonous ones. I have a serious phobia, can't even watch them on TV.
Anybody out there a herpetologist, or just have info? Thanks!

I'm no herpetologist, but Maine has the reputation of being the only state in the lower 48 without poisonous snakes. You'll find a few place names that reference the timber rattlesnakes that were once found in extreme southwestern Maine -- there's still a Rattlesnake Hill -- but they were exterminated back in the 1800s, or so goes the story. I don't know of any found in modern times. Aroostook County probably has some garter snakes, absolutely harmless and actually quite useful in the garden. Not sure about anythng else.

You should be fine, I've only seen snakes a few times over 20 years of living in Maine. They are just small garden snakes anyways, they seem more like worms. At least we dont have killer bees.

Default Things

I am terrified of s#@kes
I am a native of maine and through we have no poisonous ones
we have ones that can grow up to 3 foot or more in lenght
they love rock piles and wood piles and on general i see at least 5 a year
coarse i live out in the woods and not a town
but dont believe that they dont exist here
unfortunatly they do and winter is the only time of year
that is safe from not seeing one
poisionous ones no but if your heart stops beating when you see one
does that really make a difference?

Terrie
