Hello all. I am a senior woman living in central NY. Not rich by any means. But would love to find an apartment in ME that is reasonably priced. A one-bedroom would be fine.

I did a search for low income apartments for seniors and I found several. Rent is 30% of adjusted income (whatever that means). Of course, if there is a limit on the income, I don't know what that is.

Of course the senior affordable apartments usually have pet restrictions. I have two cats. Not giving them up. I would also like to have a dog, but not a necessity.

I'm going to start looking at craig's list tho I have a high suspicion for those ads.

Ideas, anyone??

Maine has the highest rate of home ownership in the nation. The flip side of that fact is that we have on of the lowest rates of rentals. Rentals that allow pets are even lower than that.

That seems rather dismal. Why do you suppose that is? Re the rentals, that is.

You'll want to start with the Maine State Housing Authority, which provides resources for affordable senior housing in each county. You'll also want to research online the HUD income limits for PRAC section 202 (elderly housing), and to learn about how HUD determines your eligibility for this housing. You can expect to be placed on a waiting list, and one to two years is a typical wait in Maine.

You might be interested to know that there are over 9,000 seniors currently on waiting lists in Maine, so there's a significant shortage of units.

To my knowledge, most HUD senior affordable housing in Maine allow only one pet.

Hope that helps.

You might want to consider renting a small house or mobile home where you'd have a better chance of the landlord allowing pets. I am somewhat suspicious of craig's list but you can check the pets allowed box when searching. Then be very very cautious about renting from someone who actually is authorized to rent the property as opposed to just taking your money and disappearing.

This one appears to be cat friendly and heat and hot water are included.

Several things included with this one.

quietnights: Thank you ... that is great information. But a restriction of 1 pet per...... I have 2 and they were rescued from the SPCA. I won't part with either of them.

mainegrl2011: Thank you. I have same feeling about Craigslist. Need to have both eyes and ears open and pay attention to whoever you are dealing with. But at least it is a start. And who knows? I could find the absolute perfect place for me on the list. Or not.

Here's a link to subsidized housing in Maine. There are vacancies at Lakeview in Lincoln right now.
