Curious who are the short-hop air operators in Maine? I look on the internet under several search keys and come up with nothing. No scheduled air service to outlying communities from the Portland or Bangor airports? Machias? Eastport? Calais?

Twin City Air Service out of Lewiston. Ask for Nate! My Father in law uses them 20 or more times a year. They flew us to Nantuckett last summer. Nice people and nice planes.

They have scheduled service to Trenton (Bar Harbor) in the summer. Service to and from Augusta and Presque Isle is spotty.

OK ... thanks for the replies. We have several services that fly the islands here on regular schedules as well as charter. Seems Maine doesn't interconnect rural with air much. Up British Columbia and Alaska there are a also a number of short hop operators offering access on regular basis to remote points. Not too expensive as an occasional alternative when compared to gas + ferries + hours. There are a few trips to my favorite lost worlds here that involved as many as 3 and 4 ferries plus winding roads ... takes 6 hours, including 2 ferries, to get to one favorite area that is only 120 miles from me. (On the mainland! ... Ferries required because the coast is so rugged there are no roads.) Love the NW. Damn! But the cost of the real estate even in these remote places you would not believe. I won't bother. The NW is the new California Bay area. Nothing I can do but suck it up or move.

Not quite. Scheduled air service by major carrier to Trenton, Rockland and Augusta from Boston is year round. It is US Airways Express being flown by Colgan Air.

There are indepedent air services who fly by charter to other airports from various points as has been mentioned here, but there is no other regularly scheduled air service other than Bangor, Portland, Trenton (Bar Harbor or Hancock County Airport), Rockland (Actually in Owl's Head at Knox County Airport), and Augusta (Maine State Airport at Augusta).

Service to all of these airports is "all weather", which means that these airports are all equipped with full instrument landing systems. All of these airports can handle fairly large aircraft also. Hancock County airport can handle aircraft up to Boeing 707 size, although the commuter aircraft used from these smaller airports are Beech 1900 twin turbo-prop aircraft that seat nineteen people.

On a clear day flying to Boston from Hancock County Airport is a great way to see the Maine coast.

Hey, don't forget us! Presque Isle has 3 flights a day to Boston via US Airways.
