I can't say that I've seen similar drops, but it has to happen sometime. That top 10-15 percent of the price that's caused by speculation will turn around sooner or later. (Please let it be sooner!) But won't it seem strange to be relieved about gasoline that costs only $3.60 as gallon instead of $3.99?

In the long run we all will be better off on several levels if gas prices remain high. We Americans have a woeful record of not putting any money in savings, we spend all we make on stuff we don't really need. We buy homes we can't really afford and in general do not live within our means.

I feel bad for all the people squeezed by the increased cost of energy and food but most put themselves in that position.

Most people would be glad to drive something that got 80 mpg. We are at the mercy of Detroit. Try saving money when it costs you $100 twice a week to fill your 8 cylinder car. There have been few choices for people. SUV's is all we have seen from Detroit and Tokyo for years! Talk about useless. All of them with four wheel drive to boot! I'm not going to send my DW off to work in a Yugo to save gas. They are not safe. Many people need a truck for work or farming and you're not going to use a car for that. There is no other choice. I agree with you about the houses, many people have places much too large and extravagant for their means.

I totally disagree. There have been plenty of small safe compact cars availible, people choose to buy the big SUV's. If you look at the crash ratings I think you would be surprised at how safe many of them are. I wouldn't buy a Hugo either. One of my best friends who has been a pick up guy bought a Nissan Sentra about 5 years ago and loves it and now loves it even more with the 40mpg he gets.

There may be a number of them but other than the Prius none of them got impressive enough mileage to make anyone want to go from a mid sized car that gets 22 mpg to a tiny one that gets a whopping 30 mpg. Detroit had not considered gas to be an issue until Toyota forced their hand. Now that's all you see is ads for cars that get a whopping 29 mpg or some such nonsense. My wife's 1972 VW got 28 MPG. Where's the engine technology? They spent it installing DVD screens and rain sensing windshield wipers. You still can't haul 40 bails of hay with a car. An interesting thing happened at Ford yesterday, they laid off 2000 mid management people. Why? They have determined they have to concentrate on making smaller cars and they don'y make much profit on the smaller lines. I guess that explains why there are so many gas guzzlers around.
