I don't know about Downeast but here in Southern Maine the price of lobster is the same as Prime Delmonico Steak! $9.99 a pound most places! $40.00 a pound for picked lobster meat. Yes I know it's just before the lobsters shed and this time of year they're not so many of them (I ain't from away ya know) but 'cmon ten bucks a pound....$40.00 for picked meat!!! That's robbery! Now I know half of you are going to say you know so and so and can get them for boat price...many people can. The tourists can't! Restaurants are charging almost $30.00 for ONE lobster! So you fill up the SUV in New Jersey for $120.00, fill it again in New Hampshire, drive to Maine for a lobster dinner for your family of five for another $150.00 then fill the car once more on the way home. Throw in a motel, another meal and a little shopping in Freeport and you're out over a grand for a short two day trip!
I'd stay home too!

Last year, they were going for $15/lb.

I'll be getting a couple of bushels of steamers and quohags delivered for the 4th. Can't wait!

I suspect they will hit that again within a week or two! The $10.00 price was a sale price from Bailey's Lobster Pound on Bailey's Island. They are usually a medium priced place. I'm sure they're $12.00 in the grocery stores now.
I'd rather have the Delmonico Steaks any day! I'm sure steamers are pretty high now too!

so is the cost to fuel the boats being passed on to the consumer?

was telling my girlfriend I want lobster when I'm there later this month...I think she needs to befriend some locals and try to get off-the-boat prices.

just a sign of the times, eh? bummer.

That's a good question. Fort Lauderdale Mermaid knows some lobstermen maybe she can ask if fuel prices are jacking up the lobster prices. I'd have to think it's having some affect. Diesel is getting close to $5.00 a gallon on shore now and at the gas docks it must already be over $5.00 a gallon.
There are plenty of lobsters they just ain't cheap! We'll still have a few feeds this summer I'm sure! Maybe we can scrounge up a hundred bucks when we're not paying for oil next month or buying wood.

There was a huge fire in Boston that destroyed one of the harborside lobster companies. Huge numbers of lobsters were lost. Could that have contributed in the short term, to inflated prices? I know fuel has a lot to do with it as well.

The fire at the James Hook Lobster Co. broke out at about 2:30 a.m. Friday at 400 Atlantic Ave. in Boston and quickly grew to seven alarms. Nobody was inside the building at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

much akin to what a refinery fire does to the price of oil & gas...it spikes...

i bet this fire, combined with fuel costs, is the root cause of lobster prices

not sure what it's going for here in CO...more, I'd bet...

Nah,

They only lost about 60,000 lobsters in the fire. A lot of them went back to the firehouses with the BFD.

Tasty - smoked or steamed lobster?

Yes- the guys out in the bay are taking a *wicked* hit on fuel prices, and the price of lobster will be higher, as is everything right now. Also if you are far enough away, and the lobsters need to be trucked to where you are, they have likely increased their shipping prices due to fuel costs...

However, keep in mind that the lobstermen are really the low men on the totem pole, and the higher prices are more likely to reflect the increasing costs from dock-to-plate, rather than trap-to-dock.
