I can see the smoke from the mill stacks but hardly ever smell it. Occasionally if there is a storm coming and the wind it just right we get a whiff here but not strong and not often. Much depends on your location- upriver is preferable, if you can see the mill out your window it's likely you'll smell and hear it as well. Rumford is a large area, there are many homes available away from the mill and at a great price too.

Andover is nice and fairly close to Rumford. I worked putting fence in around the Rumford mill one summer. I never did get used to the smell but it really is a nice community. There was a nice little pizza place on the Mexico side of the river. We ate there every day for the two months we were there.

My parents are from the Rumford-Mexico area. I moved here in the early 1990s after summering here through my childhood. Rumford is a wonderful place to live if you enjoy small town life. The area is pretty, and the people are nice.

The smell from the mill is much less than it used to be. As stated before, it tends to blow downstream towards the Ridlonville section of Mexico, Maine. Only when rain is due does it tend to blow upstream. There are many nice areas of Rumford in which to live. There is an effort to restore the historic Strathglass Park, community of brick duplexes built by the founder of the mill for his workers. A more modern community is Swift River Park. There is also a community near McDonalds referred to as Royal Avenue, which has some nice homes. Some of our more impressive homes are found in the Proter Avenue area.

We have a number of quaint villages in our town, including Rumford Center and Rumford Point. They are five and ten miles out of town respectively, but nice places to live. Rumford Point has no commerce except for an antiques store and a used car dealer but it is near Hanover that has a villiage store. Rumford Center has a restaurant and is just a few miles from McDonalds, the bowling alley, Mardens, Dollar Tree, etc.

Isthmus Road is where you will find some open land if you wish to build. It is also home to Black Mountain, our local ski area. many from the community go skiing after work or after supper. Please contact me if you need further information on the area.

Recreation is at your fingertips in Rumford. In the winter our local snomobile clubs maintain miles of trails. In the summer, we have lakes and rivers for water recreation. There are tons of opportunities to go hiking, mineral seeking, or gold panning. If you need help, there are a number of guide services available. Please visit our wikitravel pages "River Valley (Maine)" for more information.

Bethel is just up the road from Rumford, but the prices (for everything) are higher. Rumford has not developed as a tourist area as of yet, and as such it is easier to stretch a buck here. Farmington is a college town, but has a noce downtown and a nice retail strip.
