im an old pro at this.i have made that trip a thousand times.the best rout is delta air lines.but seeing as your driveing this way is best.I-95 TO MASS GET ON I-495 TO I-90 I-90 TO I-87,I-87TO I-81 ,I-81 TO I-80,AND STAND ON IT CLEAR TO COLUMBUS.
Funny, I take the Merrit Pkwy through CT, and then I get on the Hutchinson Pkwy which runs into the Cross County Pkwy, which runs into the Saw Mill Pkwy right along the Hudson. It becomes the Henry Hudson Pkwy at the toll booth, and then you go right up and over the GW bridge. I lived at Ft. Dix, NJ for 3 years and ran that route more times than I can count coming and going to Deering, NH where my daughter lived. You can go right through the city at 5:00 p.m. on a Friday and you'd never know you were in NYC!!! I end up with more traffic in CT than anywhere else.
If you're going to be paying tolls along the way, I'd recommend you get an E Z Pass. It is good from Maine through Baltimore. You don't have to ever stop to pay a toll. It is good all through PA as well. Go to the E Z Pass website and sign up. If you do it today, you should have it in plenty of time for your trip.
I am driving home to Ohio for Thanksgiving and I am looking for a better route. When I drove from Ohio to Maine, I got directions from the yahoo, google, and mapquest, and it basically took me right through NYC. I don't want to do that again and get caught in holiday traffic. Can anyone reccommend a better route? Someone told me to get on 84 and head north towards Scranton, PA then down to 81. I will take all the suggestions I can get. HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!!!
It's good that you are double-checking...your "someone" is apparently somewhat "directionally challenged". Odd-numbered Interstate routes are North/South, even numbered routes are East/West. Even if 84 *did* run N/S, going North from this region would *not* get you to Scranton.

Ranger- no I-87, you can catch 84 off 90, and then 81 off 84 just outside of Scranton. They put in a nice new interchange a few years ago.
Agree with Corgis and Ranger for the first part until you are on I-81, then depending on if you liove in the northern part od Ohio or the Southern part would dictate if you get on I-80 or I-76 to I-70 further south. Drove this 6 times in back in May and have taken this route (to I-80) 26 times in the last 10 years. I drove the I-76 to I-70 route 7 times in the last 15 years. Made the mistake of going through the hell-hole that is I-95 south of Boston down through to DC 1 time and vowed to never drive it again unless I was headed to one of the cities it goes through.
You can take the NY Thruway. We once took route 20, the old state highway. This was decades back, but at that time it was a relaxed route with less traffic--and less speed, of course--than the thruway. No tolls either.
You can take route 2 west across ME and NH to the NH Turnpike, and head south from there.
Buy a road atlas, there are many ways to do this. Mapquest etc. have a one track mind. The very last thing any sane person wants to do is route through NYC.
We always took the I 84 route when travelling back to Pittsburgh to visit our son, but when we went to Ohio last summer we decided to take I 90 all the way past Erie down to Ohio. It was smooth sailing all the way, and you can't make any wrong turns.
Corgis' recommendation is a good one. Getting to Scranton and picking up I-84 east to Newburgh, NY is a very pretty and less stressful way to get up to New England.

We met corgis and mensaguy last time we were up and they gave us that route. I believe we shaved off about 3 hours. Kudos to them for all their help. What part of Ohio are you travelling from(i.e. can I hide in your luggage?).
I-95 to Mass to I-495 around Boston to I-90 all the way to Ohio. By far the easiest route from Maine to Ohio!!
