Are there are other historic settlements in Maine, in addition to Leonard's Mills in Bradley? I love the place; its forest setting, old covered bridge, waterwheel-powered sawmill, etc. do much to recreate the atmosphere of village life 200 years ago.
Leonard's Mills is best on still, misty mornings, with not another soul to be seen; a place seemingly frozen in time.

I also love Fort Knox across the river from Bucksport; anyone familiar with any other large, imposing castle-like stone buildings in Maine?
It's a few years now since I've been back to Britain, and I don't know if I'll get back over the big-water this coming year, as much as I'd like to [especially to Scotland ] - I'm needing to get my fortress-fix locally if I can.

Has anyone seen any private castles/keeps in Maine, recently built [or not so recently] but keeping true to an ancient form?

There are many old Forts along the coast of Maine. Some are crumbling but still worth seeing.

Ugh... wouldn't it be nice if I could spell "buildings" correctly, especially in the thread topic line?

There is a 20th Century fieldstone castle out on Squirrel island in Moosehead. One couple ran it as a restaurant for a while.

There's Fort Popham at the mouth of the Kennebec in Phippsburg. And what's the island in Casco Bay that is essentially one big fort?

The Casco bay forts are mostly concrete.

In Orland we have the "Gaol" which is a round stone pen where wandering livestock was kept until he owner paid his fine. It's directly on Route 15.

There are a number of stone "summer cottages" on Mount Desert Island. Some look a lot like castles. Be careful which driveways you walk into. A screaming Martha Stewart might run you off.

There is a church on Route 88 in Falmouth, near the Portland Country Club which looks like a castle, anybody know what I'm referring to?
