Saturday, April 25: Grafting Fruit Trees & Spring Orchard Care

In Unity Maine

Learn to propagate and reproduce your favorite fruit tree varieties.

Instructors Delton Curtis of Curtis Pond Nursery and Tim Seabrook of Five Star Nursery will explain why to graft and demonstrate Whip & Tongue and T-Budding (indoors) as well as outdoor grafting (top working) of established trees. Participants will graft stock to take home and plant. Care for seedlings will be discussed.

Please bring a sharp knife and a bag lunch. Course will run from 10-3 pm.

Five Star Nursery is the peach orchard that I have spoken of previously.

I think that anyone who can produce peaches in Maine must have a good idea of what he is doing.

Growing peaches in the colder zones can be done, but leans heavily on creating a microclimate for the tree/s, and choosing hardy (very hardy) varieties. I would rather choose a hardy variety and not bother with grafting, as then you might have to worry about die-back, but I'm just being lazy.
