Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of how the NECAPS compare to the Maine Educational Assessments, and how they may align with the Maine Learning Results? The state will be moving to the NECAP testing in place of the MEA's starting in October.

Maine kids used to take the "Iowas" and they did quite well when compared to other states. Then we started slipping. The state threw out the Iowas and substituted a different test with no history. There was no improvement. This new fourth recent testing system will further cloud any valid measurement of student progress or regression.

Yep - to me, there wasn't much rhyme nor reason to the MEA's, but of course, that's just my opinion. I was required to test using the IOWA's growing up. There was no advanced preparation or practice for us - we were simply handed our #2 pencil and tested. I don't even recall being vaguely aware that they were coming up (perhaps a day or so before). It's an entirely different era now. There's quite a bit of preparation and practice to take them now. There are pros and cons to that IMHO.

My understanding of this one is that it will start in October by testing, for example, 3rd grade skills of the kids who are beginning the 4th grade. I am just at the preliminary stage of investigating this program so I was wondering if anyone knows more about it. I've got a couple of links from someone on the school board, so I guess I'll go dig.
