We have close to 500 daffodils (100 bulbs planted every year we've been here). Last week-end my husband came inside holding a handful of daffodil heads - they were all over the yard. Just the heads...did someone bite them off? He thinks squirrels, my friend insists animals leave daffodils alone.
Anyone have any ideas? And how we can save what we have left?
But like I said to DH, what are you going to do when you find out? Put up a wanted poster of a squirrel with yellow lips?

Default OMG- too funny!

LOL, I guess you and I were on the same wave length this morning!

I've never heard of anything biting just the flower off! I wonder what ever would do that? I feel bad that you've worked so hard to plant so many bulbs and don't get to enjoy them, what a shame!
Should we put a bounty out in the squirrel with yellow lips? We'll fortify him with nuts and berries until after the daffodil season is over!

Look close to the area where your missing flowers, you will probably find Rhino tracks near them.

Rhinos love Daffodils.

Mystery solved...

Daffodils are extremely toxic to cats and can kill them.

Rabbit maybe?

My guess is wabbits... put up a wabbit fence...Dig it one foot deep, and bury it, so that they dont dig under the silly fence and get in that way...then see if you have nice plants after that.

If it were squirrels, i would simply put up a feeder so that they would leave your plants alone.

May the LORD Bless each of you.

I wish you well...

Jesse

I haven't seen a rabbit since we moved here, in fact, I always wondered about that. I have several feeders, and the daffodils are scattered all throughout the property so a fence wouldn't work, either. But thanks anyway!

I would be suspicious of crows. Maybe that is because I just had to clean up my trash...because crows tore open the garbage bag at curb side. I must say....I love crows...but I don't think I would put anything past them.

I would also be suspicious of groundhogs.....I believe they like flower heads.

Did you have rain or snow that might have caused them to fall off? Or were they in good health and shape? Not wilted?

I suppose you might want to look for groundhog holes around your property... they're destructive like that... we had to plug one in the head years ago from a bedroom window at exact daybreak because he was ruining all my pea plants along the back border of my garden.

In my neighbors garden, they came in and chopped everything in half or at the ground. Didn't even eat much. Just destroyed his whole veggie garden! Filthy rotten rodents!
