I was just up in your state and visited Fort Knox which guarded the river approach to Bangor.

I've visited old forts all along the Great Lakes and the seaboard from Louisiana to Maine and Fort Knox is the most outstanding fort I've seen in terms of it's preservation and in it's defensive features which include scarp and counterscarp rifle galleries and underground covered ways.

Kudos to the Friends of Fort Knox and the state of Maine for preserving this historic treasure.

We went their a couple of times on school trips growing up. It is a lot of fun and can be pretty scarry for kids. The last time I was there was a few years ago and there was a large osprey nest with a couple of osprey's in front of the fort, along the river.

Indeed, the unlit rifle galleries inside the walls and inside the counterscarp (outside wall of the ditch) could be very creepy. The people running the fort advise you to bring a flashlight and one is needed to fully explore the fort.

Last weekend the rifle galleries were decorated with cobwebs, creepy sounds and other scary things for the kids. And all in almost total darkness lit only by the small amount of light coming in through the rifle ports.
