I recently moved back to knox county from out of state, and my current insurance company doesn't write policies in Maine. Suggestions for cheap insurance (basic liability only, and I don't drive much)

I've used Liberty Mutual for around 18 years. They've been easy to work with.

Progressive. You can do it online and they're the cheapest I've found.

Progressive. Excellent coverage and nobody has been able to beat their prices. Love being able to take care of everything online.

Travelers. And, with any insurance company, if you have your home insured with them, and/or another driver in your household, there are discounts.

If you happen to have a connection to the teaching profession it's hard to beat Horace Mann insurance. Our premiums cannot be beat by any competitor out there. We've compared a number of times.

There are many key factors in auto insurance rating. Since you are in Knox County, your rates will be relatively low compared to, say, Cumberland County, depending on which town you live in.

But the key factors will be your driving record, your credit rating, your age, your marital status, they make and model of vehicle you drive and where it is principally garaged.

You need to shop around considerably, beginning with the larger agencies in Rockland. Compare very carefully, and be very sure that you have sufficient liability insurance to cover your real exposure to loss.

You might be well served to call your former insurance company and ask which insurance company they would recommend for you in Maine. That will be the best and easiest place to begin.

Be ready for less than enthusiastic responses from anyone, if all that you have to insure is the liability portion of a personal auto policy. You will be hard pressed to get preferential premium rates on that basis. When I owned my insurance business my main office was in the Portland area and we would receive several telephone inquiries about auto insurance per week. We always declined to quote auto insurance alone on any basis because auto liability insurance alone is called "adverse selection". The policy holder has little stake in the operation of his vehicle beyond whatever his/her sense of personal responsibility to others is, so most insurance companies look at liability only policies as an accident wating to happen and rate accordingly.

Ditto, they are a $150 lower than either of the two insurers in town.
