Employment is not the primary concern of life for many people.
Maybe not primary, but freezing and starving in the cold and dark gets old after a while.
I see a lot of rural central Mainers doing a little of this, a little of that... whatever it takes... to get by. That may not be the life everyone wants, but it works for them, and for me.
I see plenty of gray creepin' in,... but,... enough about my hair! You all know I'm as happy as can be in my little corner. If I'm poor then there's no place else I'd rather BE poor.
That's what we keep saying. We'd rather be poor in Maine than middle class anywhere else.
And what is with all this talk of Maine being gray? That's the 2nd time in as many days that I've seen it mentioned. The other time being on FB.
You want gray? Move to WI. Even if you aren't prone to SAD, you will be once you've spent a year or more out here.

I was born and raised in Maine. We moved south for the past 3 years and could take no more. We moved back in the dead of winter and wouldn't have it any other way. We are not isolated, we are comfortable with room to spread. We are not poor, my husband is making more money here than he was in the south.
What we found in the south was: abusive schools, crime every where, ignorant people, racism, traffic congestion, slow workers..... I could go on and on.
If Maine is isolated and depressing, I will take this any day over what we experienced in the south.
SO GLAD TO BE HOME!!!

I'm beyond grey. My hair is white. Maine is the oldest state. We passed Florida three years ago.
But, it looks good on you!
