I am very interested in moving to downtown Silver Spring for its combination of location and amenities. I will be working near College Park and can take a shuttle to work from downtown Silver Spring. A few questions though since I am very new to the area -

How would you rate the safety of the downtown area if I'm looking at apartments within walking distance to the metro? I've heard really varying opinions and would appreciate advice.

Any suggestions on apartments/condo locations to rent? Online reviews seem incredibly biased either way and I'd appreciate any open minded opinions. I know I will have a roommate, so I will be looking for a two bedroom with parking and a gym within walking distance to the metro.

Any additional advice about the area would be welcome!

Thanks!

Downtown Silver Spring is very safe, to put it in perspective I believe it was 2007 that the city of Alexandria, va had more murders than all of silver Spring and I'm not just talking downtown, I'm talking about the territory all the way to the Howard County border which is almost twice the size of Alexandria and larger than even Arlington at 280,000+ pop. Downtown is def the crown jewel of all of the areas that share a Silver Spring address.

IMO Silver Spring is the sweet spot of the DC area. 3 large grocery stores and more planned. MARC, Metro, Greyhound, its just a giant transportation hub. Billion dollar companies like Discovery and United Therapeutics that dare I say, surpasses downtown Bethesda in size and value. It is a bar none the most diverse area in region, ethnic groups are almost split equally.

You can walk around anytime but of course one should be cautious where ever you are at certain times.

One of the drawbacks though is the nightlife, you see hordes of young adults on their way to D.c. on the weekend. The county caters too much to families for an urban district and has definitely killed it as several nightclubs, cafe's and bars have closed over the years.

you need to state your budget and amenities, if you want in unit W/D that will certainty narrow your search and increase your price.

Thank you for your reply! I'm likely looking for a 2 bedroom, hopefully staying under the $2200 a month mark. A gym on site and the option for parking (though I know it will cost more) would be appreciated. 2 bathrooms would also be ideal, but I know that might not be an option in this price range. Additionally, walking distance to the metro is a must.

$2200 should be about enough, perhaps you can even get a 1 bed with den. What is your salary if you don't mind me asking?

A lot of new residential buildings just opened in the past month and year, a lot are new within the last 6 years. Although I dislike the fact that many new buildings allow pets which I think is just asking for trouble in high rise building.

Here are a few to look up

1200 East West (smoke free)

The Cameron

The Veridian

Are pretty much all brand new, the first is the newest and the later two have roof top pools.

Good news is I think some are still giving good incentives so check them out.
