There's already been a thread about the southern accent dying out.

//www.city-data.com/forum/gener...die-out-8.html

Raleigh's accent is becoming more "northern."

Quote:
If anything, people in Raleigh are sounding more Eastern than Southern, linguistics experts say. While characteristic accents linger in the rural South, urban centers along the East Coast talk more like each other. “Raleigh has some features that other cities along the Eastern Seaboard share, and Philadelphia has, historically, been one of these,” Dodsworth said in response to a question about Raleigh’s linguistic brethren.

And there's not even much hope that southern accents will remain in rural areas since millennials are flocking to cities.

Southern accents are viewed as a marker of inferior intellect and low social class.

Quote:
This last result, as I mentioned above, deviates from how Southern adults associate positive attributes to people speaking with a Northern rather than a Southern accent. So the researchers then gave the same test to 10-year-old children. The results after children had aged 4-5 years were quite different. Ten-year-old children from both Chicago and Tennessee thought the Northern-accented individuals were “smarter” and “in charge,” and that the Southern-accented individuals were “nicer.”

It is said that Stephen Colbert worked to suppress a southern accent.

Quote:
The emphasis his family placed on intelligence and his observation of negative stereotypes of Southerners led Colbert to train himself to suppress his Southern accent while he was still quite young. As a child, he observed that Southerners were often depicted as being less intelligent than other characters on scripted television; to avoid that stereotype, he taught himself to imitate the speech of American news anchors.

There's even a self-help book on how to get rid of a southern accent. It's titled "Say Goodbye to Your Southern Accent."

Yeah. No wonder people in this thread are fighting with every fiber of their being to remove the "stink" of the South.

Don't worry Southerners, yours is not the only accent associated with sounding uneducated. The fact is, many regional accents are on their way out because they are seen as uneducated.

The South isn't alone. New York is going that way, too.

Why the classic Noo Yawk accent is fading away | New York Post

The Chicago accent is fading, too. Sorry to say but many young millennials find accents to be ridiculous. I am a millennial (but on the cusp of being a Gen-Xer) and I appreciate regional accents, but many don't.

It's also no secret that education levels in the south are abysmal when compared to the northern states.

Yeah, but the New Yawk accent is supposed to sound tough and clever. It's supposed to make you sound street smart...like a guy who takes marks for money in a game of craps of three card monte.

The southern accent, on the other hand, is supposed to be for naive, slow, gullible people. These are the people who get hustled by the clever, fast-talking New Yawkas.

So many people naturally would want to be more closely-aligned with a New Yawk accent than a southern accent. I mean, you always have people on C-D trying to distance themselves from the South, but you never see people on here trying to distance themselves from, say, New England.

And if they can't get their way, the first response is to try to start dragging everyone else into the South with them: "Well, that's not fair that they get to be Northern. If we're Southern, then they have to be Southern too!"

The boojie people from NY don't think it sounds clever, though. I know some NYers that think it sounds abysmal. I personally like it and think it's a cooler version of the Chicago accent.
