My husband and I will be relocating from Texas to Maryland, for a job at the University of Maryland - College Park. I've been DC as a tourist, but we've never lived in the area. I have no idea where to look. We're looking to rent to begin with, but are pretty flexible on exactly what we rent. We can go up to $3500 but would like less than that. It's just the two of us and one cat, both in our 40s. Would really prefer not being next to college students, as I remember what that life is like lol. I work from home, so I'd like it to be kind of quiet.

We only have one car, so it would be nice if wherever we live is walking distance to something. Coffee/groceries/metro/something. I don't mind an apartment building, but it needs to not look like a prison. So many of those old buildings just look depressing from the outside.

I'm thinking a 1 bedroom/den or 2 bedroom. Would LOVE two baths. I'm in a 1 bed/1 bath right now and it drives me crazy.

Above all, it would be really nice if the commute wasn't over an hour. 30 min would be ideal.

Downtown Silver Spring sounds perfect. Downtown Bethesda is more upscale and has more amenities, but will cost more and is a bit further. Probably still inside 30 mins though.

I've been looking at Silver Spring! Is it a good area? Safe, and all that? A friend suggested Bethesda but it does look a bit pricier. North Bethesda is less but it seems further away and I wasn't sure how horrible the traffic would be.

I've been stuck in DC traffic before...pretty anxious to not experience that on a daily basis lol

north bethesda wouldnt be much different of a commute than bethesda, might even be easier to get on 495. Your commute would be against traffic. My fiancee does this and it doesnt seem bad. At least by DC standards.

Downtown Silver Spring is a pretty good area and getting better, but it does have a different feel than Bethesda/N. Bethesda. I'd recommend visiting all 3 to decide.

I was assuming the closer to U of M, the more students there would be. I also don't know where to look, or if it's walkable. Which is why I'm posting here ;-)

So... is it? safe/walkable/quiet enough to live?

I'd do a search of the forum, this topic has come up before. University Park and Berwyn Heights are places that are mentioned as professor-villes.

I don't think UM students really live outside of College Park proper.

Hyattsville was recommended because it seems to be a decent place very near to UM with transit and some degree of walkability, with rents below your price limit.

I'm not a pro in this area, but driving from Silver Spring to College Park would drive me nuts. That stretch gets so congested.
