Currently in Cumberland visiting some close friends...

Almost anywhere I travel in the state, I come across a Baltimore Avenue. Does anyone have a numerical count on how many Baltimore Avenues they are in the Old-Line state?

Don't have a count, but it does seem like there are a lot of them. There's also one in Philadelphia, so our fame has spread at least that far.

lots of them. but 1 is the main. and there are other common st names around the area just like other states. theres always a MLK, a Maryland ave, a university blvd, a 1st st., a route 95, a route 1, a warming waters lane, whatever. its very common. good observation btw.

Baltimore {Ave, St, Rd, Pike} is common because roads were named by where they went to. So towards Baltimore the road (later numbered US 140 then changed to MD 140) between Baltimore and Westmister was called Reisterstown Road, that at Reisterstown it became Westmister Pike. In Westminster it was called Baltimore Street (no one thought about it needing to go through Reisterstown to get there)

Same thing for roads between other community pairs. Hanover Pike becomes Baltimore Pike when you get close to Hanover PA.

It's called that because the road leads to Baltimore.

Edit: Looks like MVD beat me to the point.

Let's see:

Baltimore/Dundalk (in the St. Helena neighborhood right on the city/county line)
US 1 in Prince George's County
Towson
Friendship Village (just outside of NW DC)
Salisbury (just two blocks long)
Takoma Park
Lansdowne
Cumberland (this one happens to end at a Baltimore Street)
Mountain Lake Park (near Oakland)

For "Baltimore St.":

Baltimore
Cumberland
Hagerstown
Baltimore Highlands (runs right alongside the Light Rail just south of the City)
Savage
Annapolis Junction (near the Savage Camden Line station)
Charlestown
Abredeen
Tolchester Beach (near Chestertown, just a block long that dead ends)
La Plata (two short one-block stretches that are interrupted by the Charles Co. District Court)

So that's nine of each, although I wouldn't be surprised if there were more, but I know outside of Maryland there are Baltimore Streets in Hanover, Gettysburg, Memphis, and some other cities/towns. Perhaps the shortest Baltimore Street is one located in Eastvale, California (in the Inland Empire) that is all but one house long.

Back to "Baltimore Ave." One is prominently located in Detroit's New Center district, including the Amtrak station at its intersection with Woodward Ave. Another runs through the heart of downtown Kansas City, MO that looks somewhat reminiscent of the Baltimore Street in downtown Baltimore with a high-rise canyon.

There are a number of honours though across the pond for Charm City. There's a short Baltimore St. in Manchester, England, as well as one in Liverpool (which happens to also have a Maryland St. at one end, of which there's a restaurant called Free State Kitchen). There's also a Baltimore Road in Birmingham, and London itself doesn't leave Baltimore out entirely, with Baltimore Wharf on the Isle of Dogs, along with a business named Club Baltimore Gym overlooking the Millwall Inner Dock.

This isn't restricted to the Anglosphere. A section of Antwerpen, Belguim has a small neighborhood with streets named after cities, and this includes a short "Baltimorestraat". There's also a Rue de Baltimore in Saint-Lo, France (in the Northwestern part of the nation just south of the English Channel). Next time you visit Little Italy, remember that there's a Via Baltimora in Turin (which runs parallel to a Via Filadelfia) as well as one in Sicily not far from Palermo's Airport.

The furthest Baltimore streets are in the Belfield section of Sydney, Australia and in Port Lincoln in South Australia.
