Hi,

Can anyone provide information on what it is like to live inMount Airy, MD? Me and the wife are thinking of purchasing a home soon andneed some feedback on the area. We are also considering Olney and Crofton aswell. As of right now we reside in Laurel, MD because it is easier to commutefor our jobs. I will be commuting from Mount Airy, MD to my station inHyattsville, Md. I already realize it is a long commute but I have a coworkerwho makes the same trip and says it is worth it.

We are just lookingfor a safe quite area to buy our first home. We are used to living in a diversearea growing up back in NJ. Mt. Airy, MD seems to be the opposite of what weare use too but the low crime rate is appealing.

Not sure what you're looking for but its a nice quiet community with all the essentials right in town and larger array of amenities nearby in multiple different directions. Living in Mt. Airy you can choose to live in Frederick or Caroll County too. So you'll have different schools to choose from based off that decision. I'm not sure which county is better in terms of taxes/etc. someone else will have to chime in. There are lots of housing options, Mt. Airy is a large area so you could live in the country with lots of land or live closer to town, or even in town.

If you are looking for specifics, perhaps I could help more.

Mt. Airy has that small town feel and is a very safe area. I will say your commute can be challenging depending how you get to hyattsville as traffic around the DC area is very heavy. The earlier the better the commute. You are close to Frederick and about 40 mins from Baltimore. You aren't too far from Frederick which would be your closest "city".

Thanks for the feedback of the area. I'm definitely going to test the commute to work on a day off. Small town feel is definitely a positive when it comes to safety. Is it an area that is tolerable towards mixed families and interracial couples? I know it's 2015 but I had to ask. We have never traveled towards that part of Maryland before. Also we plan on exploring the area this weekend. Are there any good places to explore and eat.

I don't think you'll have any issues, however, the area isn't that diverse race wise, its majority white. I think in recent years its become more diverse but I haven't really been in the area too much the past 5 years to comment on recent developments.

There are a few restaurants around town, I recall there are a few nice ones on main street, which is the historic part of town. I think its a pizza shop, can't recall the name..

There are a local places as far as restaurants but if you are looking for chains, they will be in Frederick or you could drive to Columbia for more food options. The area is mostly white but i don't think you will have any issues with tolerating a interracial family.

There are a few chains, but they are more local/regional chains, and of course fast food.
