I live in Laurel and work in DC. I take the Camden MARC train from Laurel to Union Station everyday. Depending on what metro stop in DC your job is near the total commute is about an 45 min to 1 hr.

The MTA is the transit service primarily for Baltimore. The MARC trains are technically part of the MTA, but Laurel to DC you'll be looking at using the Camden line MARC trains, or driving 15 minutes to Greenbelt and using the DC Metro system (run by WMATA). Either is preferable to driving into DC.

Check out the Maryland Transit Administration website - Maryland Transit Administration Home Page. Click on the link labeled "MARC Train" and look at the map and schedules for the Camden Line. If you can't find times that fit your schedule, check out the information for the Penn Line (which runs much more frequently but also would require you to drive a little. As was previously noted you could also drive to Greenbelt and get on the DC Metro Green Line there. (Greenbelt is also a stop for the MARC Camden Line, so you'll see Greenbelt if you check the map.)

While you're studying MTA's site, also look at WMATA's site. Depending on where you are in Laurel, that site might be more useful.

Correct, Laurel has Metrobus service to most of the nearest Subway stations. There are a couple of commuter lots convenient to Laurel that have express service to the Silver Spring Metro. Laurel also has its own bus system that also goes to the Greenbelt Metro.
