Long Reach seems to be getting to be kind of questionable too. Especially near the high school. I would skip Columbia all together and look at Ellicott City or Elkridge.

Not sure if there's any section 8 housing available (the wait time gets too long and they often close it), but I know there is section 8 right beside my office in Ellicott City - I think it's called Colt's Landing at the end of Corporate Ct (just off Rt 40). They look like duplex/townhouse arrangements - but at least it's not apts (I don't think).

That would put you in the Centennial school district which is very good.

Are there any other places in howard county to avoid? Thanks everyone !!

no! Do not ruin your life. This place is filled with negativity and rude people. The school system is not all that wonderful like they say. And the worse part is everyone is so self-absorbed. Please do not move here.... If you do you will be wanting to leave and regretting moving here. I dont know anyone who likes it here.

Everything is double the cost of living even the food.

WTH what are we talkin about here....I know the OP has a legitimate inquiry but asking this question is an oxymoron....there is no area to avoid in hoco or in columbia....You may end up saying to yourself "nothing ever goes on around here" moving to hoco....My father has lived in Oakland Mills for 15 years and the only thing I can tell you to watch out for is the overzealous HOCO police pulling ppl over every 5 seconds bc there simply is nothing else going on

Seriously guys? The "bad parts" of howard county are like the good parts of most similar-sized towns across the country....

A "thug" in howard county is essentially a confused suburban teenager who listens to rap and occasionally musters the courage to shoplift to impress his friends. If Long Reach or Harpers Choice is the "bad part'" of town, you've got a pretty damn nice town.

I have to respectfully disagree. There are certain areas that have more "problems" than other areas. Unfortunately, there are a small number of people that ruin for others, just like in any other town.

x3...the so called "bad areas" in Columbia are NOTHING like the areas in other counties like PG or Baltimore County. Maybe a little violence once n a blue moon, but I surely would not consider areas "bad". Its Columbia!..maybe try going down towards laure/beltsville or glen burnie/severn and then see if you would consider Columbia's "bad areas".

All places have their "bad areas" -- in comparison with other areas of the city or county. This may mean there are just a few more property crimes in some areas, in other areas someone could get shot every night.

Let me get this straight--is this person asking if there are less safe areas of *Howard County* or if the neighborhoods could be featured on "The Wire"?

And these are some of the replies they get to their question?
