You would have to try very very hard to find a bad place to live in either town... Leonardtown would put your kids in Leonardtown high which is a little bit better than Chopticon which is where they would go if you lived in Mechanicsville... Also there are some parts of Mechanicsville that can get a little "necky"... Don't know if that would be an issue for you or not... Both high schools are good though...
Also look into the towns of Hollywood, California (I know I know), and Loveville as they are all in the same general area where you are looking... Again its hard to go wrong in Southern MD...
