hello guys,
recently laid off, currently residing in RI, and have been for a year and a half, employed in RI, and have been for 14 months. i went to file my UI Benefits VIA Rhode ISland, and when the Claim was to be finalizeed, they alerted me off a prior claim from last year that i had "open" in Massachusetts which exhausts in February, and does not allow me to open multiple claims. unfortunately the Rate in which Unemployment Insurance was offering me in Massachusetts is not enough to live off of, and support my family (200 a month) and my RI (at my new, better job) would be enough for me and my family to make it through the winter. I want nothing to do with the Massachusetts Claim and wish to Forfeit my Benefits, so that i can open my Claim with RI. the Rep from UI told me i am not allowed to do so?! is this possible? any loopholes? please please help. thank you kindly, happy holidays.

If this is not state specific, I would post this in our unemployment forum. Those folks may give you some advice.

It may not be that bad. It sounds like you can re-open the MA claim, let it exhaust in Feb, then re-open the new claim for the RI benefits; if you worked in RI for 14 months that should be plenty of time to justify a new claim--but, I'm no expert.

The unemployment clerk should be able to answer those questions.
