I just found this website walkscore.com that gives you an estimate of how "walkable" your house is to run errands. Take a look -- it's pretty neat. I have a walkscore of 75 which means it's possible for me to get by w/o a car.

That's an interesting site, but it probably only works in certain areas. Some of the business that it mentions are either not there anymore, not as described while other businesses are totally missing.

Anyway, my address scores an 11.

Not bad. I expected it to perform poorly for my address, which is simultaneously well situated near amenities and dangerous for going on foot. It managed to produce a number that seems correct to me.

Funny. We moved less than a half of a mile about a month ago. New house: 62. Old house: 14.

That's pretty funny. I guess you moved closer to the commercial center. Of course, the site isn't completely accurate, but it's fun to play around with for a little bit and to get a general idea of what's around you. Sometimes when you walk around, you'll find small shops that you didn't even know existed if you just drive by all the time.

I just downloaded it this morning since I read about it on another blog. It's really cool also! I think this website uses some of google's technology too. I bet some tech-savvy real estate professional is going to start incorporating google's extensive map technology into some sort of home-searching tool linked to the MLS and they're going to make a ton of money off it.
