We just got back from a trip to Vermont and while Stowe was lovely, our lodging was not. When we were there, we drove by a real resort and were terribly jealous. We decided that we'd take a fall getaway to a resort where the main purpose is to enjoy the resort amenities: hot tub, on site hiking, campfires, etc. The problem is that we are new to New England and don't know anything about the resorts in the area...can you help?! We'd like it to be no further than 3 hours from the Boston area, have lovely scenery, and not be too luxurious that we feel out of place eating dinner in jeans and a nice shirt. Any suggestions?

Bretton Woods in NH is a cool old hotel. Very historic.

What better place than Cape Cod itself. Some lovely Inns to stay at and beaches to enjoy. Take a drive down Cape and spend a night. Go up to the Berkshires in Western Mass. Take a trip up to Springfield for the Big E coming up.

Can find some great off-season rates on the Islands also. Sept,Oct great for Marthas' Vineyard.

You might find that it is a bit difficult to get around Vermont this fall after the severe flooding from Irene and so many bridges and roads washed out. Consider the coast of Maine. It is lovely and scenic. Check out Maine tourism on google.

The link provided in a previous response "Red Jacket" also includes a Cape Cod resort.
