I am moving from Montana to Mass. soon for my job. I will be working in Shirley one day a week and then from home the other days so commuting isn't much of an issue. I've only been in this area twice and I didn't care for Fitchburg or Leominster too much. Coming from Montana, I'm used to living in a rural area so I'm looking for something more rural and safe and quiet. I also have a 3-year-old who will obviously be in school at some point, so good schools are also a must. I'm not really looking for a city/town with a good night life or good shopping or anything; I want more quiet and safe and rural. I did like Gardner and Ayer and Shirley wasn't too bad even with the prison. Are these good areas? Any advice would be appreciated. And my budget is no more than 1300/month.
Thanks

I second the above suggestions. For 1300 you should be able to find something nice in those towns.
Personally I would strike Gardner off my list. We looked into moving out there but the schools didn't seem too good. Just driving around we saw too many sketchy people to feel comfortable. To me it felt/looked like the Lowell of 20 years ago.

Yes, you can add towns like Sterling, Lunenburg, Littleton and Pepperell to the list, too, if you are looking for a more rural feel. What is your budget?

True, you won't get quite as much for your money in those towns but they are also fairly rural. You should still find something for 1300 there as well.

Also, little that I know I do not not have the greatest impression of Shirley (or Ayer). They are not awful, just don't think they are as nice as the other places.

And yes, I would strike Gardner. Too many issues, it is cheap for a reason.

What about Clinton? Is that a good or bad area?

It's hit-or-miss, not as nice as the surrounding towns. It is a former mill town that has some rough spots. It is a little less expensive, though.
