My friends and I are thinking about doing a camping trip this summer, and it looks like Townsend State Forest affords us the most space.

What do people think about it? Anything we should know about it before committing to it?

There's no legal camping in Townsend State Forest. You might get away with it, but you'd be breaking the law. Is it possible that you're thinking of Willard Brook State Forest, which is partly in Townsend and does have an official campground?

My wife and I stayed there once, but we decided it wasn't a very attractive place--just about our least favorite state park campground. My memory of it is that the sites were very open and close together, just the opposite of "affords us the most space". There is a nice walk down beside the stream (Willard Brook) however, and there's a beach on a pond, if that's a draw for you. But lots of state parks have beaches.

Places east of the Connecticut River that we've enjoyed have been Erving State Forest, Shawme Crowell State Forest, Wells State Park and Wompatuck State Park. I've been to Otter River and Lake Dennison and thought they were OK, but that was a long time ago and my memories are very hazy. My wife has been to Pearl Hill and she didn't like it much. So there are some opinions!

I live in Townsend and no I would not recommend camping here. OP might also be referring to Pearl Hill. It also has camping and it is a little nicer then Willard Brook. But nothing to write home about. I like Lake Dennison for fishing but have never camped there.
