Hello all residents of Ishmael's port.

I am a teacher considering a job in Nantucket and wondering whether there are any affordable rentals on the island. Realistically I am not looking to spend more than $800-1k/month.

If not, is it reasonable to commute by ferry from Hyannis (the only place I've seen rentals so far)? And is it worth it to commute (not an unpleasant or expensive experience)?

I love Massachusetts and I love the ocean, so it seems like a good match so far. I just don't know if it might be out of my league.

Thanks in advance!

You can't commute everyday from Hyannis. You may be able to find a room to rent in that price range in the winter, but realistically you will probably have a hard time finding suitable year round housing with that budget.

I suggest visiting Nantucket before contemplating living there year round.

You might be able to make it if you rent an apartment during the school year and move off the island for the summer, so your landlord could make a heap of money renting the place to visitors. But would you want to do live that way?

There are some provisions for teachers. A close friend and coworker moved to Nantucket because her husband got a teaching job. The school, knowing that housing is a serious issue in attracting teachers to Nantucket, helped find them a decently priced rental. I believe that Nantucket pays their teachers more to offset the cost of living, so consider that in your budget. You also will not necessarily need a car on island - and avoiding it would be best. Gas is incredibly expensive!

Year-round housing does pose a challenge. My friend ended up finding a job (though far below her pay grade) and they are buying a house on the island.

wow, thank you to everyone for your replies. you saved me a lot of time and worry. It would certainly be a beautiful place and I wouldn't mind it being empty in the winter, but financially I think it's clear enough to me that it will be too arduous to try it right now, without any savings.
