Is it faster to take the pike or route 9 during the hours of 7:30am into Framingham from the south - and 4:00 out. I would leave my house in Hanover on the south shore at 6:30 and need to be in Framingham at 8am. then I would leave at 4pm to be home by 5:30.
Thoughts? I want to avoid the toll expense.

Of course it's quicker to take the Pike!

Sounds like a horrible commute however you do it. Have you actually accepted this job? All of southern 128, from the split to Rt 9, is notorious for bad traffic, and going "against the flow" on the pike to Framingham doesn't guarantee you a smooth drive, either. I can think of very few commutes in the Boston area that sound less appealing than this one.

Horrific commute. If it ever actually takes 90 minutes each way I promise you it will feel twice as long.

I would take Rt-9 because the stretch of 128 between Rt-9 and the Pike is bumper to bumper in the mornings. It will still end up being a couple minutes longer taking Rt-9 if your office is right off the Pike on the Southboro line (Staples/Bose area), but you're trying to avoid tolls right? Why don't you try both for 1 week each and see which one you like better? The tolls are not that expensive west of 128. It's only about 20 or 30 cents per exit - maybe $1 per day round trip.

Yea, I really don't think there's a worse commute in MA. The northbound traffic on Route 3 really kicks in around Exit 12 or 13. You're stuck in that and have to go through the Braintree split and then the on-ramp to the pike. Possibly the 3 worst sections you can drive through.

I'd be far more concerned about being stuck in traffic than paying the tolls.

Can you change you're work hours at all?

Oh boy! Thanks all! I'm taking the job so it's going to happen. I'll take the suggestion to try the pike 1 week and rte 9 another week, to test it out. I used to commute to needham and that was a solid hour, so I'm adding a 1/2hr to the trip making it an hour and a half. I'm hoping for a 7-4 schedule but not sure that will work due to the nature of the job. Thank you everyone! I'm hoping the job will be worth the trip. Thank goodness for Sirus, Howard and NPR.

Get up earlier, if you leave before 5am, you'll cut your commute time by half. Try to get flex time or get paid more for starting earlier.

Still horrible commute though. I btch and moan about my 10-30 minute one-way commute from Milton to downtown on the Southeast Expressway parking lot, I can't imagine doing a 90 minute one-way commute.
