My husband and I are considering relocating from Salem to Gloucester, to a neighborhood adjacent to the north of Burnham Field, on the northeast side of downtown. We visit Gloucester for fun frequently but don't know much about specific neighborhoods. I can't find any crime data online. Driving through the neighborhood, it appears to be single-family residences and duplexes, working class (similar to our current neighborhood). My concerns are possible crime and whether it's family-friendly. Obviously one of the draws of the neighborhood is proximity to the Burnham Field with its (seemingly) nice playground. Does anyone know if this area is considered "safe" or has a bad reputation? I am aware that Gloucester schools are rated below-average. We have a toddler and are in our mid-30s. I am a SAHM and my husband works in Boston. This area appealed to us for reasonable prices and proximity to train, playground, and harbor. Thank you!

Just a couple thoughts. The trains don't run as often from Gloucester as they do from Salem and it will add 30 minutes to his commute each way. Are the schools in Gloucester really that much better than Salem to make that move? West Gloucester offers a much better family atmosphere. The downtown area is not as desirable and the prices show it.

Everything Parsec says is true, however, I personally think the Gloucester downtown area is a on a major upswing and will become even more so with the advent of the new hotel in 2016. So a house at a reasonable price, could be a good investment. A realtor in the area recently mentioned to me that walkability is becoming much more desirable in Gloucester and the basic "bones" are there now.

From a driving point of view, Gloucester is arguably easier to get to than Salem considering how difficult it is to get in and out of especially from now until Christmas.

I never knew Gloucester downtown was considered bad. I just had fun there a few weekends ago and almost always do.

Born and raised in Gloucester, spent the first 39 years of my life there. I lived near Burnhams field for a few years late 90s early 2000s. I would not move back there now if the house was free. Gloucester has some beautiful spots, that is not one of them.
